While I have been drawn to midwifery my entire life, I began to attend births, in various capacities in 1984 and formally apprenticed as a midwife from 1998-2002. I attended primarily home births while training with a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) in Iowa.

I am actively involved with preserving the practice of traditional midwifery and have served on the Midwifery Guild Boards in both Iowa and Minnesota. I am not a doctor, actively practicing nurse, or nurse-midwife. This means that I cannot provide care in a hospital (outside of doula support) or write prescriptions. I am an unregulated, autonomous midwife by intentional choice. I carry a license in Iowa and Wisconsin where licensing is mandatory, and in Minnesota there is voluntary licensing for the practice of midwifery. I chose to not be licensed as it creates more opportunity for providing care that is uniquely individualized for each family.

As a traditional midwife I have also offered my services internationally, volunteering in several locations in Eastern Africa countries. I have served in very rural isolated centers, to clinics located in densely populated, impoverished inner cities, to heavily populated, low economic resourced displacement camps. These experiences have truly transformed my life and how I practice midwifery. I hold deep gratitude for the families, birth keepers, and communities in this region who have taught me so much.

I have two children who are now growing families of their own. I have deep gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices and support my family and friends offered me as I supported regional families and answered the call of the community created midwife. Without their love and support I could not have served my community.

Before I was even pregnant with my first babe, I knew that I wanted to have a home birth and midwifery care. I had the joy of having Brenda as my midwife for my three children. I loved my experiences from start to finish and the seed was planted that maybe this was the path for me. In March 2021 I decided to take the first steps down that path with doula training through Childbirth International. I also started with Brenda as a birth assistant that same month. I continued my education and became a Certified Lactation Counselor in August 2021. When fall came and my older kids were back in school, I started in the apprentice role with Willow River Midwifery and worked through the self study program through National College of Midwifery. Before starting birth work, I was a stay at home mom and still thoroughly enjoy the time I get to spend at home with my kids (Cora, Calvin and Charlie). In my life before kids I was a nurse; I graduated from the University of Iowa in 2008.

I completed my apprenticeship in December 2023 and became a CPM in March 2024. I am currently licensed in Iowa as a Certified Professional Midwife.

Gloria Nolt Apprentice Midwife

July of 2000 was when I first met Brenda, but I don't remember it, as it as at the birth of my twin sister and I! Brenda had the honor of assisting my mother in her first home birth of twins, as an apprentice midwife. It was many years before we met again. In 2020 I moved to the mountains of Haiti where I served at Gospel to Haiti Clinic for a year and a half. There I got to attend my first birth and totally loved it. After returning to my home to Iowa I got connected with Brenda and started attending births as a birth assistant. Then in the spring of 2024 I started my apprenticeship. What a joy it is to see a first breath taken, the promise of new life.

Diana Shank, Birth Assistant

Hi, I'm Diana Shank. I first became interested in birth work when I was pregnant with our first daughter and knew I wanted to be a stay at home mom but I was looking for something I could do aside from that. I started looking into doula classes and began working towards getting certified as a doula. After our daughter was born I started attending births as a birth assistant to get some experience and finish my certification. I love serving with the team at Willow River!
